This Privacy Policy (“Policy”) describes how the Screen Ruler browser extension (“Extension”) and the marketing website screenruler.site (“Website”) collect, use, store, and share information.
By installing or using the Extension, or by using the Website, you agree to this Policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the Extension or the Website.
1. Who we are
Screen Ruler is a productivity tool that helps you measure and inspect layouts on web pages you choose to use it on. The Extension runs inside your browser. For questions about this Policy or our privacy practices, contact us using the support or contact options shown on our Chrome Web Store listing or on https://screenruler.site/.
2. Summary
- The Extension needs access to the active tab and page content only to draw the ruler UI and perform measurements you initiate. We do not sell your personal information.
- We use Google Analytics 4 (GA4) with the Measurement Protocol to understand aggregate product usage. Event data is designed to avoid full page URLs and page titles in routine analytics events.
- Some information is stored only on your device (for example, settings and coarse usage counters).
- When the Extension cannot run on certain protected pages, we may log a minimal diagnostic signal that can include a coarse site identifier (see Section 6).
- Uncaught errors in the extension overlay (content script) and on the options page may be reported to GA4 as stability diagnostics with truncated message/stack and rate limits, without full page URLs.
- The Website may use third-party technologies such as Meta (Facebook) Pixel and Google Fonts as described in Section 5.
3. The marketing website (screenruler.site)
When you visit the Website, standard web technologies may apply, including:
- Meta (Facebook) Pixel — if present on a page, Meta may receive information about your visit for measurement and advertising according to Meta’s Privacy Policy. You can manage ad preferences through Meta and your browser.
- Google Fonts — fonts may be loaded from Google; Google may receive technical data such as your IP address as described in Google’s Privacy Policy.
We do not intentionally collect names, postal addresses, or payment details through the public landing pages unless you contact us through a channel we publish.
4. Information the Extension accesses on web pages
To provide its features, the Extension must interact with the web page you are viewing when you turn the ruler on for that tab. Depending on the features you use, this can include:
- Reading the DOM structure and geometry of the page to draw guides, rectangles, element inspection overlays, and related UI you control;
- Listening to pointer, mouse, or keyboard events you send while interacting with the Extension’s UI or measurement modes, as needed for those features.
The Extension does not change how websites work except by overlaying its own UI and, when you use certain modes, handling events as described in the product documentation. We do not use the Extension to read passwords you type into forms, to access unrelated tabs, or to collect the full text of pages for advertising profiling.
5. Information stored on your device (local storage)
The Extension uses browser storage (including chrome.storage.local, chrome.storage.sync where available, and chrome.storage.session as applicable) to save items such as:
- Your preferences and ruler settings (for example, colors, modes, panel layout);
- A pseudonymous analytics client identifier and session information used for GA4;
- Coarse, aggregated counters used for product improvement and future monetization safeguards (for example, counts of measurements grouped into ranges, calendar-day summaries, and flags that certain milestones were already reported).
This local data stays on your device unless an item is explicitly sent to analytics as described below. Uninstalling the Extension removes Extension storage subject to browser behavior; you may also clear site data or extension data through Chrome settings.
6. Analytics and diagnostics we send to Google Analytics 4
When analytics is enabled in our build configuration, the Extension sends events to Google Analytics 4 using Google’s Measurement Protocol from the Extension’s service worker and related components. Google processes these events under Google’s policies. You can read how Google uses data in Google’s Privacy Policy: https://policies.google.com/privacy
Typical information included with analytics events can include:
- A pseudonymous client identifier and session identifier generated and stored in your browser;
- Event names (for example, that a measurement completed, that a panel control was used, or that the ruler was enabled on a tab);
- Coarse parameters such as feature toggles, size “buckets” (ranges), ruler mode names, extension version, and similar non-content labels;
- A small engagement time value used for GA4 reporting conventions;
- Error reports for stability, where message and stack traces are passed through sanitization that replaces obvious URL patterns with placeholders before transmission;
- Uncaught errors in the extension overlay on web pages (content script) and on the extension options page may be sent the same way: short context label, truncated message and stack, rate-limited, without full page URLs.
We do not intentionally include full page URLs or full page titles as parameters in the routine product analytics events described above. If you use features that involve restricted browser pages, the Extension may send a separate diagnostic event that can include a coarse site identifier (for example, a normalized host/domain key) and a category label describing the restriction, so we can understand compatibility issues without storing full browsing history.
You can learn more about Google Analytics and opt-out options that Google offers for some products here: https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/6004245
The Extension may also respect a local analytics opt-out flag stored in your browser if present; if your build exposes a user control for analytics, use that control. If no control is shown, removing the Extension stops further analytics from that installation.
7. Websites and third-party services
The Extension may open links we operate (for example, install, uninstall, or help pages on https://screenruler.site/). Those pages are covered by this Policy where we control them; embedded third parties follow their own policies as linked above.
8. Legal bases (EEA, UK, and similar laws)
Where applicable privacy law requires a legal basis:
- We rely on performance of a contract (providing the Extension you requested) and on legitimate interests in operating, securing, and improving the Extension and Website, including limited pseudonymous analytics and diagnostics, balanced against your rights.
- Where consent is required for a specific activity (for example, certain cookies or pixels where required by law), we will rely on consent mechanisms as required by law.
9. Retention
- Locally stored Extension data remains until you remove it or uninstall the Extension, subject to browser behavior and backups.
- Data processed by Google is retained according to Google’s settings and policies for the GA4 property we configure.
- Data processed by Meta is retained according to Meta’s policies and your ad settings.
10. Your rights
Depending on your location, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or object to certain processing, or to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority. Because most Extension-related data is processed on your device or as pseudonymous analytics, the practical steps may include uninstalling the Extension, clearing extension data, or contacting us so we can advise what is feasible for data held in our systems (for example, if you emailed support).
11. Children
The Extension and Website are not directed to children under 13 (or the higher age required in your jurisdiction). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children as part of the Extension.
12. International transfers
If you are outside the country where our services are operated, your information may be processed in countries where we or our service providers operate, including the United States and countries where Google or Meta processes data. We use providers that meet standard contractual or legal transfer mechanisms where required.
13. Security
We implement reasonable technical and organizational measures appropriate to the nature of the Extension and Website. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure.
14. Changes to this Policy
We may update this Policy from time to time. We will revise the “Last updated” date above when we do. If changes are material, we will provide additional notice as required by law or through the Extension, Chrome Web Store listing, or this Website.
15. Contact
For privacy questions, contact us through the support or contact channel published on our Chrome Web Store developer page or on https://screenruler.site/.
